Finding a NY Therapist Who's a Fit for You: Essential Questions
By Dr. Matthew Paldy
Finding a therapist can be intimidating and confusing. The relationship you have with your therapist is a critical one and it's important to find a therapist who you feel is a good fit for you (also known as the "therapeutic alliance") so I recommend consulting with several different therapists over the phone to see who you feel most comfortable with. You should ask yourself what you think would be best for you. Sometimes a person needs a therapist who "holds them accountable" while others do better with a therapist who is softer in their approach. Ironically, sometimes the approach we want is not the approach we need.
Don't be afraid to ask questions such as:
• What is your education and training?
• What is your view on how long will therapy should last?
• What is your working style like? Do you mostly listen or are you participatory?
• Do you have a particular worldview? How might that affect our work together?
• What is your philosophy on how growth and change occur in therapy?
• What theoretical influences do you draw from?
These are suggestions. Finding a good NYC therapist can be daunting or even scary. Ask questions - a good therapist will listen carefully to your concerns.
